Zwatra Transport specialises in exceptional transport.
In this blog, we explain what exceptional transport is and, among other things, answer the question whether the rules for exceptional transport are the same per country.
Exceptional transport, also known as convoi exceptionnel or heavy transport, refers to the transport of loads that deviate from what is required by law because of their size(s) and/or weight.
The loads to be transported are thus longer, wider, higher and/or heavier than permitted. This type of transport requires special vehicles, well-trained drivers, the appropriate exemptions and often transport escorts.
There are a number of aspects that characterise exceptional transport.
1. Dimensions and weight
The load to be transported consists of one indivisible whole and exceeds the legal requirements for road transport.
2. Exemptions
Special exemptions are required for exceptional transport. However, the requirements differ per country or region.
3. Route planning
Due to the dimensions and/or weight of the load, a specific route suitable for the transit of such goods must often be chosen. In addition, there are differences in the requirements for the upper road network (national roads) and lower road network (provincial and municipal roads). The exemption prescribes a mandatory route. An additional route study beforehand may be necessary.
4. Driving times
Depending on the dimensions, the exemption may prescribe limited driving times during which the transport may be on the road. The larger the dimensions, the greater these restrictions are. For example, in the Randstad, the time slots 'between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.' and 'between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.' are often prescribed.
5. Guidance
Escort by special transport escorts may be prescribed to guide the transport safely through regular traffic. Police assistance may also be required for extreme exceptional loads.
At Zwatra Transport, besides standard tractors, (heavy transport) tractors are also used for exceptional loads.
There are different types of trailers that can be used for exceptional loads. Zwatra Transport has the following trailers available in its fleet for this purpose:
● Flat trailers
● Semi low-loaders
● (Euro) low loaders
● Mega trailers
● Curtainsider trailers
Many trailers are single or multi-extendable, creating extra loading length. The cargo box can also be widened, as shown in the picture below. This is for cargo that needs width support.
Naturally, a truck-mounted crane can be provided for loading/unloading the cargo.
Due to the great diversity of equipment, determining the right trailer for the exceptional loads on offer is no easy task. Zwatra Transport has the expertise and our professionals are ready to determine, together with you, the right (heavy transport) combination and any auxiliary equipment.
One Europe unfortunately does not mean one set of rules. For exceptional transport, a unified policy is hard to find.
Example: an exemption to transport a transformer with a loaded width of 430cm and a maximum mass of 70 tonnes from Rotterdam to Marseille has to be applied for in four countries: The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. All these countries have separate legal requirements and regulations on permitted roads and driving times, vehicle equipment, cargo marking and required escorts.
Due to the differences per country, preparing for such an exceptional transport is a complex process and the final journey can take much longer than a standard transport because of all the regulations.
At Zwatra Transport, we arrange the entire exceptional process, from the application for the exemption to the final delivery.
We transport exceptional loads throughout Europe. So if, for example, you want to transport a large transformer from Rotterdam to Marseille, you have come to the right place! Would you like to know more about what we can do for you in terms of exceptional transport?
Can my exceptional cargo be transported as closed transport?
This is not possible because the cargo is longer, wider and/or higher than standard closed vehicles. However, it is possible in some cases to tarpaulin or seal the shipment.
Can trailers be included in heavy transport?
As the load must consist of one indivisible whole, trailers are not used in exceptional transport. A trailer is less suitable for consignments with deviating dimensions because a driver has a better overview with a trailer.
Is it possible to store my exceptional cargo at Zwatra Transport?
At Zwatra Transport, it is possible to store goods. We have options for indoor and outdoor storage at our locations in Delft, Vlaardingen and Hardinxveld-Giessendam.
